Travelling to Luxembourg

Recommendations

SDG 13

EBLIDA, in keeping with our policy of applying the UN Sustainable Development Goals, recommends to all EBLIDA Conference delegates to travel in a way that has the least impact on the environment.

Below you will find recommendations from our local host, on how to reach Luxembourg by train/bus, car and plane.

Travelling from neighboring countries

train

France (Strasbourg, Metz, Paris, etc.): the train connections are very good. You can be in Luxembourg City from Paris in 2 hours (TGV). Flight is also a good solution. Car: additionally to fuel you have to pay toll on highways.

Germany: Take a flight or the car. Avoid the train! Bad connections to Trier (end of Western Germany), slow train coming from Koblenz.

Belgium: Take the car! If you come from the Netherlands, keep in mind the rush hour around Rotterdam, Antwerp and Brussels.

You can travel from Brussels to Luxembourg City in 2 hours by the E411.

If you choose the alternative of driving via Liège (road-works, detours, rush hour), please be aware that there is no gas station on the motorway E25 between Liège & Arlon.

If you plan to purchase cheap fuel in the Ardennes, you have to head for Martelange at the Belgian-Luxembourg border, then the federal road N4 to Arlon, before joining the highway again.

It is possible to travel by train, but it takes at least 3 hours through the Ardennes from Brussels, after having waited for 1 hour if you came from The Hague. On Sundays there are often works on the tracks and you may need to transfer from train to bus in Arlon.

The “faster” train alternative via Liège to Luxembourg is interrupted for at least several months, as the main tunnel collapsed.

BusTravelling by bus: you can come (and get back) from Belgium, Netherlands, Germany or France to Luxembourg by FLIXBUS for affordable prices. Even on Sunday 16th of April! https://www.flix.com/?noRedirect=true. However, it is a long and slow journey (often 8 hours)! Every FLIXBUS will stop in Luxembourg at “P+R Bouillon (Park+Ride - Bus Parking), Luxembourg”.

From there you can:

  1. Walk to Central Station (“Gare centrale”) in 20 minutes or
  2. take a (free) bus to “Gare centrale”, like number 10, in 7-10 minutes or
  3. if you want to be quickly at the hotel: take a taxi there. Ca. 30-40 Euro to your Hotel on the territory of Luxembourg-City.

For those staying the Hotel Mercure Off Kirchberg: at Central station or at “Luxexpo” (Gare routière Kirchberg), take a (free) tram, to go to “Bibliothèque nationale” (20 minutes or 5 minutes). Then walk down in the valley, through the “Rue du Kiem” till the hotel (another 12-15 minutes).

Travelling by car … we are recommending car-pooling.

Please find out if your hotel has an own parking lot – and how much they charge per day.

Travelling from non-neighboring countries

Luxembourg has an international airport, so a flight is always a good option.

airplaine

There are direct flights:

REMINDER: Be aware that public transportation in the whole country (train, buses, tram) is for free, especially if you arrive by plane.
